Denmark has used up its natural resources for 2024

Denmark has reached its overshoot day earlier than ever in 2024, which shows a negative trend away from sustainability.

On March 16, 2024, Denmark reached its "overshoot day," the point at which the country had used up all its natural resources for the year. The concept of Earth's Overshoot Day refers to the date when humanity has exhausted the planet's capacity to regenerate resources and support biodiversity within a single year. Were the entire planet to consume resources at the rate of Denmark, we would require 4.8 Earths, or nearly five times the resources currently available.

Alarmingly, Denmark has become one of the first countries globally to deplete its natural resources, doing so 12 days earlier than in 2023. This development signifies a move away from sustainable practices, underscoring the urgency of fostering positive environmental impact in these critical times.

Circular Economy and Recycling: Pathways to Sustainability

According to a 2020 analysis by the World Economic Forum, transitioning to a nature-positive economy — one that enhances the planet's health and strengthens biodiversity — could boost the global GDP by 10.1 billion Danish kroner annually and create 395 million jobs by 2030. Thus, the focus is not on compromising our welfare and growth but on being more mindful about how we produce and reuse resources. In this scenario, embracing a circular economy, optimizing value chains, and managing Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions within an organization's value chain) are crucial for businesses committed to sustainability. Emphasizing recycling and the reuse of resources allows companies to lessen their reliance on new raw materials and diminish their environmental footprint.

Adopting circular principles requires a comprehensive understanding of supply chains and production processes. This involves negotiating with suppliers to ensure that materials and products are designed with reuse or recycling in mind, thereby facilitating a closed-loop system post-use. Additionally, it includes efforts to minimise Scope 3 emissions, enhancing competitiveness and brand reputation.

In the workplace, integrating circular solutions might mean opting for reused or recyclable products, such as phones, computers, or machinery, when updates or replacements are necessary. This approach not only curtails the generation of new resources but also postpones the arrival of the “overshoot day.”

Turning Knowledge into Action

While our resources are finite, the potential for changing attitudes and lifestyles is boundless. Denmark leads in green energy innovation, and we understand the necessary interventions to reverse the current downward trend. The challenge lies in translating knowledge into action and implementing sustainable practices in daily life to restore nature's equilibrium.

At C7, our goal is to drive the shift towards greater sustainability by simplifying the process for our clients. Through our digital course, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can achieve energy savings of 10-30%, contributing significantly to the planet's wellbeing.
